- The 1985 NHL Entry Draft was the 23rd NHL Entry Draft. It was the first draft outside Montreal. The event was held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto, Ontario, and attended by 7,000 fans. The National Hockey League (NHL) teams selected 252 players eligible for entry into professional ranks, in the reverse order of the 1984–85 NHL season and playoff standings. This is the list of those players selected. Toronto hosted and made the first overall pick; this coincidence would not occur again until Montreal hosted and drafted first at the 2022 Draft. The last active players in the NHL from this draft class were Joe Nieuwendyk and Sean Burke, who both played their last NHL games in the 2006–07 season. (en)

Als First Overall Draft Pick wurde der kanadische Flügelstürmer Wendel Clark von den Toronto Maple Leafs ausgewählt. Auf den Positionen zwei und drei folgten Craig Simpson für die Pittsburgh Penguins und Craig Wolanin für die New Jersey Devils. Die Reihenfolge des Drafts ergab sich aus der umgekehrten Abschlusstabelle der abgelaufenen Spielzeit 1984/85, wobei die Playoff-Teams nach den Mannschaften an der Reihe waren, die die Playoffs verpasst hatten. Erstmals in seiner Geschichte fand der Draft nicht in Montréal statt, sondern begann mit dem Jahre 1985, in regelmäßigem Wechsel zwischen anderen NHL-Städten zu rotieren. Zugleich setzte sich der Trend der Vorjahre, verstärkt europäische Spieler zu verpflichten, nicht fort; stattdessen fiel die Zahl der im Draft verpflichteten Europäer um knapp 25 %. Darüber hinaus gilt das Jahr 1985 als vergleichsweise schwacher Jahrgang, so erreichte nur Joe Nieuwendyk die Marke von 1000 Scorerpunkten, während er – neben Igor Larionow – eines von bisher nur zwei Hall-of-Fame-Mitgliedern darstellt. Zu erwähnenswerten Spielern zählen dennoch unter anderem Ulf Dahlén, Derek King, Calle Johansson, Eric Weinrich, Fredrik Olausson und Kelly Buchberger sowie die Torhüter Sean Burke, Mike Richter und Bill Ranford. All'evento si presentarono circa 7 000 tifosi in attesa di conoscere il nome della prima scelta assoluta, assegnata quell'anno alla squadra locale dei Toronto Maple Leafs.Dei giocatori selezionati al primo giro solo uno non debuttò mai in NHL. I Toronto Maple Leafs selezionarono il difensore dai Saskatoon Blades, i Pittsburgh Penguins invece come seconda scelta puntarono sull'ala sinistra , proveniente dai Guelph Platers, mentre i New Jersey Devils scelsero in terza posizione il difensore dei Kitchener Rangers. Fra i 252 giocatori selezionati 150 erano attaccanti, 80 erano difensori mentre 22 erano portieri. Dei giocatori scelti 104 giocarono in NHL e 2 entrarono a far parte della Hockey Hall of Fame. (it)
