- شملَ التاريخ الدبلوماسي للحرب العالمية الأولى أوجه العلاقات غير العسكرية بين الفاعِلين الأساسيين خلال الحرب العالمية الأولى، وكان هؤلاء هم: بريطانيا العظمى، وفرنسا، وروسيا، وإيطاليا (بدءاً من العام 1915)، والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية (بدءاً من العام 1917). ضمّت قوات المركز ألمانيا، والإمبراطورية النمساوية المجرية، والإمبراطورية العثمانية (تركيا). كما انخرطت بعض الدول الأخرى ومستعمراتها في الصراع. كان الهدف من التفاعلات الدبلوماسية غير العسكرية والدعائية بين الدول هو حشد الدعم لقضاياها، أو لتقويض الدعم الذي يتلقاه العدو. ركّزت نشاطات الدبلوماسية خلال فترة الحرب على خمس مسائل: حملات التخريب والدعاية لإضعاف الروح المعنويّة لدى العدو؛ تعريف وإعادة تعريف أهداف الحرب، وهو الأمر الذي أصبح أصعب مع استمرار الحرب؛ استمالة الدول المحايدة (إيطاليا، الإمبراطورية العثمانية، بلغاريا، ورومانيا) إلى محور الحلفاء عبر منحهم أجزاء من أراضي العدو؛ تشجيع الحلفاء للحركات الوطنية عند الأقليات في دول المركز، خصوصاً التشيك، والبولنديين، والعرب. إضافة إلى ذلك، طُرحت عدة مقترحات سلام من قِبل الدول المحايدة، أو من طرفٍ مشتركٍ في الحرب؛ ولكن لم يتحقق أيّ منها. أرادت الدول المحايدة من مقترحات السلام التي طرحتها وضع حدّ للفظائع المرتكبة في الحرب، بينما كانت المقترحات التي قدّمتها أطراف مشتركة في الحرب مجرّد أدواتٍ دعائيّة لإثبات أنهم منطقيّون في طلباتهم وأن الأطراف الأخرى هي المتعنّتة. The major "Allies" grouping included Great Britain and its empire, France, Russia (until 1917), Italy (from 1915) and the United States (from 1917). Opposing the Allies, the major Central Powers included Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) and Bulgaria. Other countries (Belgium and Japan, for example) also joined the Allies. Non-military diplomatic and propaganda interactions among the belligerents aimed to build support for one's cause or to undermine support for one's enemies. Wartime diplomacy focused on five issues:
* subversion and propaganda campaigns to weaken the morale of the enemy
* defining and redefining the war goals, which became harsher as the war went on
* luring provisionally neutral countries (Italy, the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria and Romania) onto one's side by offering slices of enemy territory
* encouragement of nationalistic minority movements within enemy territories, especially among Czechs, Poles, Arabs, Irish, and minorities in the Russian Empire
* peace proposals. Neutral countries and belligerents variously made multiple peace proposals; none of them progressed very far. Some were neutral efforts to end the horrors. Others involved propaganda ploys to show one's own side as reasonable and the other side as obstinate. (en)
