- Gun laying is the process of aiming an artillery piece or turret, such as a gun, howitzer, or mortar, on land, in air, or at sea, against surface or aerial targets. It may be laying for direct fire, where the gun is aimed similarly to a rifle, or indirect fire, where firing data is calculated and applied to the sights. The term includes automated aiming using, for example, radar-derived target data and computer-controlled guns. (en)
- Le pointage d'une arme désigne le positionnement de celle-ci dans le but d'atteindre une cible. En artillerie, le pointage est un processus consistant en une combinaison d'actions visant à ajuster :
* l'azimut : pivotement horizontal, par exemple par virage du véhicule ou par chariotage ((en) traversing) du support.
* la portée : élévation verticale. Le pointage peut s'effectuer par visée directe, où le pointeur voit la cible et pointe l'arme vers elle. Il peut s'effectuer par visée indirecte, où le pointeur dispose d'informations (coordonnées, points de repère...) sur base desquelles il calcule le positionnement de l'arme. Tant en visée directe qu'indirecte, le pointeur peut aussi tenir compte du mouvement de la cible, de l'effet du vent sur la munition ou les projectiles, de l'effet de gravité, etc.

При наведенні гармати ствол рухається у двох площинах: горизонтальній і вертикальній. Гармата наводиться по «траверсу» – обертається у горизонтальній площині – для наведення на ціль і по «підвищенню» – рухається у вертикальній площині – для встановлення правильної дальності до цілі.
