- La Library of Congress subject headings (LCSH) és una llista d'encapçalaments de matèria creada l'any 1898 als Estats Units per catalogar els registres de la Library of Congress, comprèn un tesaurus (un llenguatge controlat) d'encapçalaments de matèria, per aplicar-ho als registres bibliogràfics. Els encapçalaments de matèria són una part integral del control bibliogràfic, que té per funció -en algunes biblioteques- organitzar i disseminar documents. Els encapçalaments de matèria s'apliquen a qualsevol registre existent en una col·lecció. Facilita als usuaris l'accés als registres del catàleg que pertanyen a una mateixa matèria. Si els usuaris només poguessin cercar per títols i altres camps de descripció, com els autors o els editors, haurien d'esmerçar grans quantitats de temps buscant registres de matèries similars, però indubtablement perdrien molt de temps per la ineficàcia del sistema. - Die Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) bilden einen Thesaurus (im Sinne der Bibliothekswissenschaft) mit Schlagwörtern, der von der Library of Congress in Washington gepflegt wird. Die LC Subject Headings helfen Bibliotheken, Dokumente zu sammeln, zu organisieren und zu verbreiten. LCSHs werden jedem Medium im Bibliotheksbestand zugewiesen und erleichtern den Benutzern das Auffinden von weiterer relevanter Literatur zu ihrem Thema. Könnten die Nutzer die Medien nur über den „Titel“ oder andere formale, nicht den Inhalt erschließende Felder wie „Verfasser“ oder „Herausgeber“ suchen, müssten sie sehr viel Zeit darauf verwenden, Medien zu verwandten Themen aufzufinden. Zweifellos würden ihnen hierbei aufgrund der für die sachliche Suche ineffektiven Suchstrategie viele relevante Titel entgehen.Mit den LCSH vergleichbare Systeme in anderen Sprachen sind die deutsche Schlagwortnormdatei (SWD) und das französische (RAMEAU). LC Subject Headings are an integral part of bibliographic control, which is the function by which libraries collect, organize, and disseminate documents. It was first published in 1898, a year after the publication of Library of Congress Classification (1897). The last print edition was published in 2016. Access to the continuously revised vocabulary is now available via subscription and free services. Subject headings are normally applied to every item within a library's collection and facilitate a user's access to items in the catalog that pertain to similar subject matter, in order to save time finding items of related subject matter. Only searching for items by 'title' or other descriptive fields, such as 'author' or 'publisher', would take more time and potentially miss locating many items because of the ineffective and inefficient search capability.
