About the RL Merit League The purpose of the RL Merit League is to provide development matches for existing and newly formed Rugby League clubs in the Midlands and the North. At Open Age it is intended as a feeder league to the Rugby League Conference and will be part of that league's administration. The league's third season commences in April 2008 and information can be obtained at this email address or phone on 07855-281746 or 0785-294-5989. Entries can be accepted up to the end of May and the Grand Final rounds off the season in August. There is now a junior league at the under 14 and under 16 age groups - the same rules apply. See here for junior information. How the League works To accommodate everyone's needs, the league will operate a merit system, where teams arrange between themselves to play as many or as few matches as they wish to during the season. The results are collated into a merit table, with extra points awarded for playing matches, and the winners determined by average points. There are no hard and fast rules for the number of players or substitutes used - if you want to play a 9-a-side game that's fine - as long as the clubs agree in advance. Who can join? The league is primarily aimed at clubs or institutions in the Midlands and North of England and in North Wales. Second string teams of RLC teams are welcome, as are new clubs who want to try rugby league and feel that the RLC is too strong for them or where they cannot guarantee week-in, week-out commitment.
