- Der Namensstreit zwischen Mozilla und Debian entstand im Jahr 2006, als der Mozilla-Entwickler Mike Connor die Einhaltung bestimmter Bedingungen seitens Debian forderte, um die Marken der Mozilla Corporation weiterhin verwenden zu dürfen. Debian war mit diesen Bedingungen nicht einverstanden und entschied, die modifizierten Versionen der Mozilla-Programme umzubenennen: Firefox in Iceweasel, Thunderbird in Icedove, Sunbird in Iceowl und SeaMonkey in Iceape. Diese Änderungen waren ab Debian 4.0 (Etch) aktiv. Im März 2016 wurde der Streit beigelegt. In der Folge verwendete Debian wieder die von Mozilla vorgegebenen Bezeichnungen und Logos. In Debian ist Firefox seither in zwei Versionen enthalten: Firefox, das dem regulären Veröffentlichungszyklus folgt, sowie Firefox-esr, dem „Extended Service Release“ mit längerer Unterstützung durch Mozilla. Ce renommage fait suite à un conflit ayant eu lieu en 2006 entre le projet Debian et la Mozilla Corporation. Plus précisément, il s'agit de la solution trouvée à une incompatibilité entre les principes du logiciel libre selon Debian et la politique de marque de Mozilla. Chaque renommage consistait en :
* la reprise du code source de l'application d'origine ;
* la modification du nom et du logo (non libres selon Debian) ;
* l'application de patchs spécifiques à Debian ;
* des mises à jour et une évolution suivant de près celles de l'application d'origine. (fr)
- In 2006, a branding issue developed when Mike Connor, representing the Mozilla Corporation, requested that the Debian Project comply with Mozilla standards for use of the Thunderbird trademark when redistributing the Thunderbird software. At issue were modifications not approved by the Mozilla Foundation, when the name for the software remained the same. The Debian Project subsequently rebranded the Mozilla Firefox program, and other software released by Mozilla, so that Debian could distribute modified software without being bound by the trademark requirements that the Mozilla Foundation had invoked. The new names established by Debian were Iceweasel for Mozilla Firefox, Icedove for Mozilla Thunderbird, and Iceape for SeaMonkey. These changes were implemented in the subsequent version of Debian (Etch). In July 2007, Iceowl, a rebranded version of Mozilla Sunbird, was added to the unstable branch of Debian. In 2016, a number of Mozilla employees and Debian maintainers argued that the branding was no longer needed, and on 10 March 2016, Debian's unstable branch switched back to the Mozilla branding, with the stable branch planning to switch after Iceweasel's end of life. The decade-long branding issues between the Debian Project and Mozilla Corporation ended in 2017 when all Mozilla applications in Debian were reverted to their original names. (en)
