- A certificate policy (CP) is a document which aims to state what are the different entities of a public key infrastructure (PKI), their roles and their duties. This document is published in the PKI perimeter. When in use with X.509 certificates, a specific field can be set to include a link to the associated certificate policy. Thus, during an exchange, any relying party has an access to the assurance level associated with the certificate, and can decide on the level of trust to put in the certificate. (en)

Couramment abrégée par le sigle PC la Politique de certification est l'ensemble de règles, définissant les exigencesauxquelles l’autorité d'enregistrement se conforme dans la mise en place de prestations adaptées à certainstypes d’applications. La politique de certification doit être identifiée par un OID définipar l'autorité de certification. Zasady wydawania certyfikatów mogą być diametralnie różne dla różnych CA lub dla różnych poziomów certyfikatów wydawanych przez jednego CA. Od braku jakiegokolwiek potwierdzenia danych (np. certyfikaty testowe), poprzez sprawdzenie autentyczności adresu poczty elektronicznej, żądanie dostarczenia dokumentów faksem, aż do wymogu osobistej weryfikacji tożsamości w punkcie rejestracyjnym, lub u notariusza.
