- استخدم مصطلح «شوام» في مصر خلال القرن التاسع عشر للإشارة إلى المسيحيين العرب من أبناء المهاجرين من بلاد الشام وينتمي غالبيتهم إلى الكنيسة الأرثوذكسية الشرقية والكنائس الكاثوليكية الشرقية (الكنيسة المارونية وكنيسة الروم الملكيين الكاثوليك) وقد لعبوا دورًا طليعيًا في تحديث المجتمع وعصرنته والانفتاح على الغرب الأوروبي وإنشاء دور الصحف وتحديث الطباعة والنشر وكذلك العمل في المهن الحرة والمصارف وكانوا جزءًا من الطبقة الثرية والمتعلمة. وقد انتقل بعض هؤلاء المفكرين ذوي الأغلبية المسيحية من سوريا ولبنان إلى القاهرة والإسكندرية التي كانت في ظل الخديوي إسماعيل المكان الأكثر انفتاحًا في الدولة العثمانية؛ برز منهم بشارة وسليم تقلا مؤسسي جريدة الأهرام، رجل الأعمال والمصرفي حبيب السكاكيني ورجال الأعمال من آل صابات، وأدباء وشعراء أمثال جورجي زيدان وخليل مطران وفرح أنطون، المسرحي جورج أبيض والسينمائي يوسف شاهين، وغيرهم. - Les Syro-Libanais d'Égypte (arabe : شوام مصر, translittération : Chaouam Masr ou Chawam Masr), sont un groupe ethnique minoritaire en Égypte. La plupart sont chrétiens de rite grec melkite catholique, grec orthodoxe et maronite catholique, issus des pays qui sont aujourd'hui connus comme la Syrie et le Liban (et aussi la Jordanie et la Palestine). Fiers de leurs racines levantines, ils constituent une petite mais reconnaissable communauté. Comme d'autres (Grecs, Juifs, Arméniens, Italiens, Maltais), cette communauté a presque totalement émigré hors d'Égypte après les nationalisations et restrictions des libertés dans les années 1960 . - The Syro-Lebanese of Egypt (Egyptian Arabic: شوام مصر, transliterated: Shawam Masr) (French: Syro-Libanais d'Egypte), also known as Levantine-Egyptians or Syro-Egyptians, are an ethnic minority group in Egypt. They are Egyptians who have ancestry originating from the Levant, mostly what is now Syria and Lebanon. The majority of Egypt's historic Syro-Lebanese community is Christian, mainly Eastern Catholic (Melkite and Maronite) and Eastern Orthodox. Since antiquity, there has always been a Levantine presence in Egypt, however, they started becoming a distinctive minority in Egypt around the early 18th century. The majority of Syro-Lebanese migrants who arrived in Egypt during this time were French-speaking and highly influenced by the European Culture. By the dawn of the 20th century, the Syro-Lebanese of Egypt were considered a powerful and cosmopolitan community that played an important role in both Egypt's economy and culture. Due to the rise in nationalism along with the loss of economic freedoms during the 1950s, a part of Egypt's Syro-Lebanese community left the country immigrating to the Americas, Europe, and Australia, as well as many returning to their native Lebanon (especially Beirut) and Syria. Notable descendants of Egypt's Syro-Lebanese community include the world-renowned Egyptian actor Omar Sharif (born Michel Chalhoub) and Egyptian film director Youssef Chahine. (en)
