- Der fliegende Zirkus der Physik von Jearl Walker (Original-Erstausgabe The Flying Circus of Physics. John Wiley & Sons, USA, 1975) ist ein Buch, das sich mit physikalischen Phänomenen der Umwelt auseinandersetzt und diese erklärt. Aufgrund der einfach gehaltenen Schreibweise und der reichhaltigen Bebilderung ist es auch für Physik-Laien, sogar für Kinder, einfach, den Erklärungen zu folgen. Die deutsche Erstübersetzung erfolgt durch Uta und Lothar Weichert 1977 im Verlag Oldenbourg. Das Buch selbst ist in zwei Abschnitte gegliedert, in einen Teil, der nur Fragen aufwirft, und einen weiteren Teil am Ende des Buches, welcher die Fragen beantwortet und physikalisch erklärt. Eine Frage wäre z. B.: „Es ist nicht besonders gut, bei großer Mittagshitze die Blätter eines Baumes oder Strauches mit Wasser zu bespritzen, denn die Wassertropfen hinterlassen braune Flecke auf ihnen. Was verursacht sie?“ (5.28) Die Antwort lautet: „Die Tropfen wirken wie ein Brennglas, wodurch die Blätter verbrennen.“ Walker ist auch bekannt für seine Kolumnen in der Zeitschrift Scientific American, die teilweise auch als Bücher erschienen sind. - El Circo ambulante de la física (en inglés The Flying Circus of Physics) es un libro escrito por (1975, con segunda edición en inglés publicada en 2006), es un libro que formula (y responde) cerca de mil preguntas relacionadas con la física en aspectos cotidianos. Hace fuerte énfasis en fenómenos que pueden experimentarse en el día a día Dice en el prefacio "si el lector comienza a pensar acerca de física cuando cocina, vuela o hace pereza al lado de un torrente de agua, sentiré que el libro valió la pena". Típicamente, las cuestiones formuladas por el libro son fenómenos con los cuales los lectores ya se han encontrado, pero que no han pensado desde la perspectiva de la física. Por ejemplo: Por qué tantas velas, especialmente pequeñas, parpadean y estallan en los últimos momentos antes de apagarse? Qué determina la frecuencia del parpadeo? La respuesta de Walker involucra conceptos de capilaridad, realimentación negativa y calor latente de vaporización. (es)

The emphasis is strongly on phenomena that might be encountered in one's daily life. From the preface: "if you start thinking about physics when you are cooking, flying, or just lazing next to a stream, then I will feel the book was worthwhile". Typically, the questions posed by the book are about phenomena that many readers will have encountered, but not thought through physically. For example: "Why do many candles, especially small ones, flicker and pop in the last moments before burning out? What determines the frequency of flickering?" (3.110). Walker's answer involves qualitative arguments of capillarity, negative feedback, and latent heat of vaporization. (en)
