We Need Volunteers

Volunteer

Our beautiful village has so many opportunities to get involved: volunteer, join a club, participate in programs, and see what’s going on in our houses of worship! Why volunteer? Why join a group? Why get involved?

What’s New From
Mayor Tom Howley

June 17, 2024

The warm weather has encouraged many visitors to spend time at our beautiful Waterfront Park and lakefront beach, and the sale of seasonal beach passes remain steady.  And since the weather has been cooperative lately many outdoor activities have attracted larger than normal crowds.

Congratulations to the eighth graders at the Middle School who will be celebrating the next stage in their education this week and who have gathered at the beachfront to celebrate their last summer together before they head off to high school or technical education classes.  Even the Elementary School kids who, with their parents, enjoyed impromptu “moving up” activities at the lake this week.

Meanwhile our parks and recreation team, in conjunction with the Town of Warwick’s Department of Public Works, has been working to remove a large tree that fell on our old pumping station roof, after the recent microburst that damaged a large swath of property on the Eastern Shore.

The Little League season is beginning to wind down in preparation for the upcoming all-stars activities this season. The Centennial Steering Committee is busy preparing for a Babe Ruth Memorial baseball game later in the season on August 18 with the Flemington Nashanock Base Ball Club, a 19th Century Historically Accurate baseball event to take place in our Village, in celebration of our centennial. The fist professional league – The National Association – was formed in 1871. Five years later, it was replaced by the National League, the oldest continuous professional sports league in the world. The American League, formed in 1901, later joined the National League to create what we know today as Major League Baseball.

The lake requires periodic weed growth management in order to minimize the appearance of any invasive plants. Consequently we will be applying an herbicide treatment to the lake next Wednesday, June 26, that will not affect swimming activities. Read more about it>>

Finally we are nearing completion on the preparation of our annual fireworks display on the lake, on July 6, 2024, with the expected display to take place between 9-9:30PM. (There is no residency requirement to attend this event). Vendors have been invited to apply for the opportunity to sell their wares that evening to the typically large crowd that will assemble to listed to the music performance before the fireworks. This year will also feature an Antique Car Show event and Craft Show. All are invited. To learn more about upcoming events in our Village, Click on GWLNY.org.

Attention Residents: Keep Your Garbage Secure – Bears in the Area!

Friendly reminder: With warmer weather approaching, bears are becoming more active in our community. To keep both you and the bears safe, it’s important to properly secure your garbage.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Use bear-proof containers: If available in your area, invest in a sturdy, latching container specifically designed to keep bears out.
  • Store trash indoors until disposal day: The closer garbage gets to collection day, the less attractive it becomes to bears. Don’t put your trash out the night before pickup.
  • Double bag your garbage: This adds an extra layer of protection and makes it less appealing for bears to tear into.
  • Clean up spills and messes: Food scraps and lingering odors can attract bears. Keep your garbage cans clean and disinfect them regularly.
  • Compost food scraps: Consider composting food scraps instead of throwing them away. This reduces the amount of attractive food sources for bears.

Remember: A fed bear is a dangerous bear. By taking these simple precautions, we can help keep our community safe and discourage bears from relying on human food sources.

Thank you for your cooperation!
