Editorial

Blair: “I only know what I believe.”

Blair tries his best to avoid being remembered as Bush’s ‘poodle’, but his low popularity ratings reveal that Iraq will be his legacy. The war that was launched on lies about WMD but was really about oil and the containment of China will be what he is remembered for.

Blair’s legacy: Building an alternative to new Labour

Alan Thornett looks at Blair’s Britain after ten years of a new Labour government.
Venezuela

The Challenge of Socialism in the 21st Century

Some provisional lessons from Venezuela
The tension at the heart of Venezuela’s Bolivarian revolution, there for several years, has come to the forefront in recent months, since Hugo Chavez’ re-election as president in December 2006. Here Stuart Piper discusses the tension between the revolution’s anti-neoliberal and anti-imperialist achievements – which are undeniable – and its socialist promise – which remains just that, a promise.

Socialist Resistance

Socialist Resistance is a monthly Marxist newspaper produced since October 2002 by ISG supporters and other individual activists from the environmental, global justice, anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist and anti-war movements as well as Respect.

Palestine

Palestinians divided: End the Israeli occupation!

The bloody conflict that has broken out between Hamas and Fatah in Gaza and the West Bank will be music to the ears of the Israelis, the US and the EU.
Labour leadership transition

Missed chances to build Respect

The inauguration of Gordon Brown and his new deputy leader at the end of June will close a period of relatively heightened debate and slightly more open-minded analysis of the state of working class politics in Britain.
Venezuela - Media Debate

Media in Venezuela: from mythology to liberation

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s recent refusal to renew the licence of a private television company Radio Caracas Television (RCTV) for using the public airwaves has triggered a new polarisation, and something of a debate over how media freedom and democratic access to the media can be achieved and maintained in the process of socialist revolution. Here we carry three initial responses to the events and the hysterical bourgeois response to Chavez’s action.

Labour Party

Politics under Brown

Socialist Resistance editorial – 23 July 2007
New Labour’s long awaited “plan B” – the replacement of Blair by Brown when Blair became electorally damaged beyond repair ¬ is working, at least as far as Labour’s short term electoral prospects are concerned. We have the predictable “Brown bounce”, with new Labour leading the Tories for the first time in many months. Tory/Labour opinion polls were always meaningless whilst Blair was still there and until Brown took over.
Palestine

Only the end of the Israeli occupation can halt the unfolding tragedy in Gaza

The tragedy unfolding in the streets and refugee camps of Gaza represents the death throes of the Oslo “peace process”.
Labour Party

Brown wins without a contest - where now for the Labour left?

Socialist Resistance Statement
We can all say good riddance to Tony Blair. It was fitting that it was the war that got him in the end. However he tried he could never shake off the lies and bloodshed involved. Gordon Brown will now be crowned Labour leader and then Prime Minister on June 27. Its goodbye Blair, but Blairism continues.
