- ALIWEB (Archie-Like Indexing for the Web) is considered the first Web search engine, as its predecessors were either built with different purposes (the Wanderer, Gopher) or were only indexers (Archie, Veronica and Jughead). First announced in November 1993 by developer Martijn Koster while working at Nexor, and presented in May 1994 at the First International Conference on the World Wide Web at CERN in Geneva, ALIWEB preceded WebCrawler by several months. ALIWEB allowed users to submit the locations of index files on their sites which enabled the search engine to include webpages and add user-written page descriptions and keywords. This empowered webmasters to define the terms that would lead users to their pages, and also avoided setting bots (e.g. the Wanderer, JumpStation) which used up bandwidth. As relatively few people submitted their sites, ALIWEB was not very widely used. Martijn Koster, who was also instrumental in the creation of the Robots Exclusion Standard, detailed the background and objectives of ALIWEB with an overview of its functions and framework in the paper he presented at CERN. So auch The Wanderer, die zwar als Crawler-Suchmaschine galt, jedoch lediglich Adressen und Dokumente sammelte. ALIWEB wurde erstmals im November 1993 von dem Entwickler angekündigt und im Mai 1994 auf der internationalen Konferenz in Genf zum World Wide Web vorgestellt. ALIWEB war anderen Webcrawlern um einige Monate voraus, da sie auch Inhalte der Webseiten indexierte. Dies geschah jedoch nur, wenn man den Index in Form von Stichworten (Metatags) selbst lieferte. Dies gab den Webmastern die Möglichkeit die Begriffe, die die Benutzer zu ihren Seiten führen würden, selbst zu definieren. Einige Webmaster verstanden nicht, wie man die Daten indexieren konnte, und griffen daher eher auf Bot-basierte Suchmaschinen zurück. Nur wenige Personen haben ihre Webseiten bei ALIWEB eingereicht, wodurch die Suchmaschine nicht weit verbreitet war. Precedette di alcuni mesi . ALIWEB permetteva agli utenti di sottoporre la posizione dei file di indice dei loro siti il che permetteva al motore di ricerca di includere le pagine web e di aggiungere delle descrizioni della pagina e delle parole chiave scritte dall'utente. Ciò permetteva ai webmaster di definire quali parole avessero dovuto condurre gli utenti a una certa pagina ed anche di evitare che dei bot usassero tutta la banda.
