Laurence Robertson

Date of birth

29 March 1958

Political profile

Laurence Robertson was first elected to the Commons in 1997 and in his first four years as an MP focused his attentions on his constituency, where he fought against development proposals.

He also established himself as firmly on the right of the party.

A great admirer of John Redwood, he is an opponent of all constitutional change and one of the party's most committed Eurosceptics, with an absolute opposition to the euro.

He is the author of a book arguing against European integration.

Some of his views were more controversial, such as his opposition to the Good Friday Agreement.

Mr Robertson hit the headlines during the 2001 election campaign when he said alleged anti-immigration comments attributed to then MP John Townend were basically true but badly expressed.

Mr Robertson later apologised for his comments at the instigation of the Conservative leadership.

He was an early supporter of Iain Duncan Smith's bid for the leadership and has now been made a whip.
