- L'anomenat xec britànic és un en la contribució del Regne Unit al pressupost de la Unió Europea. El descompte es calcula aproximadament com 2/3 del dèficit fiscal del Regne Unit amb la UE, és a dir 2/3 de la diferència positiva entre les aportacions del Regne Unit al pressupost de la Unió i el que aquesta li retorna en forma de prestacions i transferències. Actualment (2005) el xec britànic ascendeix a £3bn (4,35bn d'euros) l'any. Malgrat això el Regne Unit és el segon màxim contribuent net només darrere d'Alemanya i el quart si ens referim en termes per capita. El xec britànic distorsiona les sol·licituds de finançament de la UE. El govern britànic és conscient que 2/3 del finançament demanat a la UE seran a la pràctica deduïts del xec britànic. Per tant l'incentiu a solicitar finançament de la Unió Europea és molt menor i més encara tenint en compte que normalment els fons de la UE només suposen un finançament parcial i requereixen que el projecte sigui cofinançat per les autoritats locals i per tant encara augmenta més la despesa pública britànica. Els altres estats membres, les contribucions dels quals no es veuen afectades pels fons rebuts no tenen incentius a moderar les seves sol·licituds de finançament. El resultat final és que es produeix un efecte reductor de la despesa de la Unió Europea al Regne Unit i, per tant, un agreujament del dèficit que el xec britànic estava destinat a corregir. (ca)

- The UK rebate (or UK correction) was a financial mechanism that reduced the United Kingdom's contribution to the EU budget in effect since 1985. It was a complex calculation which equated to a reduction of approximately 66% of the UK's net contribution – the amount paid by the UK into the EU budget less receipts from the EU budget. Based on a net contribution of €11.7 (£9.6) billion in 2016, the UK Treasury estimated the 2017 rebate amounted to €6.6 (£5.6) billion reducing the ultimate UK contribution for the 2017 budget to €10.4 (£8.9) billion. Although the rebate was not set in the EU treaties, it was negotiated as part of the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) every seven years and had to be unanimously agreed. (en)

Wywalczyła go w 1984 na spotkaniu przywódców EWG w Fontainebleau ówczesna premier Margaret Thatcher, argumentując, że Wielka Brytania znacznie więcej wpłaca do budżetu UE niż z niego otrzymuje, a mając niewielki sektor rolniczy w małym stopniu korzysta z dotacji unijnych dla rolnictwa. Szermowała przy tym hasłem, że chce "nasze pieniądze z powrotem" od Wspólnoty Europejskiej. Już w 1979 wspomniała o tym w Dublinie, narzekając, że "za każde dwa funty, jakie wnosimy, dostajemy z powrotem jednego. Przez to nasz wkład netto do Wspólnoty wyniesie w przyszłym roku miliard funtów, a potem będzie tylko jeszcze gorzej". Przystępując do negocjacji budżetowych, Wielka Brytania zażądała ograniczenia swoich rocznych wpłat o 730 milionów funtów. Pozostałe kraje członkowskie zaproponowały rabat w wysokości 580 milionów. Thatcher odmówiła, w związku z czym ostatecznie ustalono kwotę blisko sześciuset milionów funtów. Nowa formuła budżetowa ograniczyła brytyjską składkę netto. Umowa o rabacie, przywitana w Wielkiej Brytanii jako patriotyczne zwycięstwo, zaowocowała serią mini korekt dla innych krajów członkowskich. Rabat brytyjski współfinansowany był bowiem przez pozostałe kraje członkowskie, których wpłaty z tego powodu zostały podwyższone. Składka płacona przez Wielką Brytanię na rzecz budżetu UE jako stosunek do DNB była zatem mniejsza w porównaniu z innymi krajami członkowskimi i wynosiła ok. 0,8% dochodu narodowego brutto (DNB). Dla przykładu, rabat brytyjski w okresie 1997-2003 wyniósł ok. 4,6 mld euro rocznie. Wyjście Wielkiej Brytanii z UE spowodowało konieczność ponownego przeliczenia składek wnoszonych do budżetu UE przez pozostałe kraje członkowskie. (pl)
