Applying the Power of Omics to R&D Show Transcript Narrator In the last 10 years, the world has spent well over a trillion dollars in pursuit of deeper insights into disease and better therapies. Scientists at Amgen believe many answers that we re seeking can be found in DNA and the human data now being collected around the world. The challenge is working effectively with the oceans of data needed to paint a clear picture of how disease happens and how we can stop it. Dave Reese I started as an intern in internal medicine 30 years ago, where we dreamed about some future where we could actually use genetics and other techniques to really affect the practice of medicine. Now we are right on the threshold where that is happening. We are making those dreams a reality. K ri Stef nsson And the reason we can do this today is that we can gather, we can store, and we can mine data of a magnitude that was inconceivable only ten, 15 years ago. Narrator Iceland may be small in population, but the country has had a major impact on human genetic research. Dave Reese In 2012, Amgen acquired deCODE Genetics, and to me this was an absolute watershed moment in this industry. They had about two thousand 600 whole genomes, a couple of hundred thousand individuals on whom they had done genotyping. Now there are over a million and half individuals encompassed in the genetic databases We have embarked on new collaborations that will add a million more. Now we are in, I think, a very important transitional period where we want to go from scale to depth. Narrator Some of that depth will come from proteomics the study of proteins present in blood or tissue. Ray Deshaies So I look at the DNA sequence, that s kind of like a blueprint of a house.
